The tracked changes in a document remain even after you have turned off Track Changes. Track Changes: On or Track Changes: Off will display on the status bar (bottom bar in the document.) If this is not showing, right-click the status bar, and check Track Changes.
Click the down arrow on Track Changes > Track Changes to turn it on or off. 
If you turn on Track Changes, Word will save all changes and comments made. Remove Tracked Changes manually or selectively Remove all revisions or comments as outlined above. Click the File tab to return to your document and changes you made will be saved automatically. To add or change properties, hover your pointer over the property you want to update, for example Author, and enter the information. To selectively edit document data, click the File tab > Info.
After you have completed these steps, save the document, and it will no longer contain the items you have removed.Įdit Document Properties, Personal Information and other document data. Click Remove All to remove the item of your choice, for example all comments, revisions, versions and annotations. Click Inspect to identify hidden content. The Word Document Inspection window shown below opens up. To open the Document Inspector, click File > Info > Check for Issues > Inspect Document. Use the Document Inspector to remove hidden data To show all changes and comments, click the Review tab on the ribbon, and click All Markup on the Tracking group. All comments that were inserted remain in the document until deleted. All the revisions that were made to a document while the Track Changes feature was turned on remain part of a Word document until they are accepted or rejected. Hopefully this will save someone else some time pulling out their hair wondering why a text box that they’ve deleted heaps of times before in other documents won’t delete now.Avoid unintentionally distributing hidden information, such as the document author and names that are associated with comments or tracked changes, by removing hidden data. That’s where I saw the check box that prevented it from being deleted:Īll it took was to clear that check box, click OK, and I could delete the text box successfully. 
To check the content control’s properties, I had to select the control, then go to the Developer tab, and click Properties. Here’s what one of these content controls looks like (Note: they don’t exist in Word 2003): Once I cleared that check box, I could delete the content control and its surrounding text box. Then I noticed that it had a content control box for the title and wondered if that could be the culprit - it was! Someone had set the properties for that content control to stop it from being deleted.

I had a devil of a time trying to delete a text box from the cover page of a Word 2007/2010 document the other day.
